📦 Required Tools & Supplies
-
Torque wrench (inch & foot-pound capable)
-
Camshaft degree wheel
-
Dial indicator & magnetic base
-
Timing set (true roller recommended)
-
Assembly lube (moly-based)
-
Break-in oil (high zinc content, ZDDP)
-
Harmonic balancer puller
-
Engine gasket set
-
New valve springs, locks, retainers (per recommended specs)
-
Camshaft installation handle (optional, but helpful)
🛠️ Installation Steps
1. Preparation
-
Disconnect battery and drain coolant.
-
Remove valve covers, intake manifold, water pump, harmonic balancer, and timing cover.
-
Remove rocker arms, pushrods, and lifters.
-
Remove the old camshaft carefully to avoid damaging cam bearings.
2. Camshaft Installation
-
Coat all lobes and journals with moly camshaft assembly lube.
-
Slide the new camshaft into the block carefully, using a steady hand or cam installation handle.
-
Install new timing set (true roller preferred) and align timing marks.
-
Verify camshaft degree using a degree wheel to confirm correct intake centerline.
3. Valve Train Setup
-
Install new hydraulic roller lifters (pre-lubed).
-
Insert pushrods and rocker arms.
-
Adjust preload on hydraulic lifters:
-
Zero lash, then add 1/2 turn on rocker adjustment nut.
-
-
Install recommended valve springs, locks, retainers, and seals. Verify coil bind clearance.
4. Reassembly
-
Reinstall timing cover, harmonic balancer, water pump, and intake manifold.
-
Reinstall valve covers and connect all accessories.
-
Fill engine with break-in oil (ZDDP fortified).
-
Reconnect battery.
5. Initial Startup & Break-In
-
Prime oiling system with drill & priming tool until oil pressure is seen at all rocker arms.
-
Set ignition timing to initial ~12–16° BTDC.
-
Start engine and immediately hold RPM at 2,000–2,500 for 20 minutes to break in cam and lifters.
